Despite all the volatility that seems to surround the industry these days, our sector is in pretty good shape. Many shops, parts retailers and distributors have seen a recent burst in activity, which could be the result of more drivers finally addressing furloughed maintenance, among other factors.
The September issue of Aftermarket Business takes an extensive look at the investment community and the general financial health of leading aftermarket companies, and the resounding consensus is, our niche of the industry is solid, people will continue to drive, and by extension, continue to have repairs done on their vehicles. And catering to this customer and going above and beyond his or her expectations is of critical importance.
Now, most of the companies we’ve covered were retailers, wholesalers and distributors. How does this news affect your repair shop? It doesn’t, at least not directly, but this is a proper time to think of investments from your employees’ standpoint.
What kind of stake do your techs have in your business? Are they clock punchers, or do they truly care about whether your company succeeds?
One way to help technicians assume more ownership of their jobs is through employee bonuses and other incentives. Time and money seem to be high on the list of motivators, but whatever method you devise, your employees probably would welcome the opportunity to be more involved.
Some shop owners find it crucial to become more personally involved with their employees and their communities. This alone can encourage your workers to care more about their day-to-day activities and how much money in sales your shop generates.
One shop owner I spoke with, who was also a finalist in last year’s Motor Age Tops Shops competition, brings up his system of a “team bonus” approach, where the employees all benefit equally from increased sales. Others offer extra time off to those who perform well. Some provide gift cards to their employees’ favorite stores and restaurants.
And keeping your employees happy while simultaneously challenging them is a sure way to gain an extra edge over your competition.
What do you think about employee bonuses or other incentives? Do they work? (Click here to discuss).
