European technology lights the way

Audi OE lightWith 44 LED lights illuminating just one area of the headlamp, Behr Hella’s focal point at Autopromotec 2011 lit the booth with focused, changeable light.

The company, which has a distribution presence in the United States, showcased the new light in its booth at the Bologna, Italy show. Daniela Copetti, product manager sales and marketing aftermarket, explained at Autopromotec that the fully LED headlight is low energy and will outlast the vehicle itself.

The light is available for the Audi A8 in Europe, but not the U.S. The first model of the light was featured on the Cadillac Escalade. She adds that the lighting units are OEM-exclusive, not yet available for the aftermarket.

There are 44 LED lights in the lower portion of the headlamp, 22 orange for the turn signal and 22 for beams. The advanced forward system allows the driver to change the light based on driving conditions.

For example, Copetti says if the weather turns bad, the driver can switch off two of the LED lights have others in the lower portion illuminate to spread the beams in a softer pattern. For city driving, the lights can be adjusted for wider beams, and later readjusted for longer beams for highway driving.
