The OEM's continue to increase the use of foams in the vehicle construction process. Foams gained in use due to being lighter, available and inexpensive. Automotive Foam comes in many forms and uses, which may include:Controlling Noise and Vibration, adding structure to prevent flexing, predictable collision energy management and fuel efficiency. However, it's one of the most commonly "missed" items in the repair process. In this episode of Repair University. We discuss the uses and applications of foam in Collision Repair. If you want more details on Automotive Foam Application visit www.3MCollision.com

OEM and Industry Repair Standards Are Pointless

Since early 2011 one of the hottest debates in Collision Repair has been industry and OEM repair standards.

Last summer I-CAR announced a plan during CIC to maintain a centralized database of OEM repair procedures only to announce last month they had changed their mind. It sent our industry back down into a debate on OEM vs. Industry procedures and who will be the guardians of right and wrong.

As I listen to the debates and read the articles I can’t help but think that it’s all really pointless for Collision Repairers.

There is a commercial from SC Johnson Companies that sums it up. Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson is the fifth generation to lead the company. In the commercial he talks about going beyond industry standards to help SC Johnson customers understand the chemicals and ingredients of their products. He sites the differences in industry standards and family standards.

A majority of the facilities in our industry are family owned and operated. We don’t do business in a community, we are the community. Our customers are classmates, neighbors and church members. It’s this level of accountability that has us go beyond an industry minimum requirement, and seek the best repair in quality and safety.

In a recent study conducted by Harvard Business, they analyzed the financial performance of family owned business’ from 1997 to 2009. They found that those companies far out performed corporations, but wondered why? When they spoke to the business owners a common theme arose. They were each running their business for a future generation, not short term profit or growth.
It’s that focus on the future and the well being of the customer that makes our business and it’s owners special.

With each repair research the available information and do the right thing each and every time. When the OEM has a procedure available follow it. If they don’t take the time and effort to research the operation, seek advice and make a safe repair. It’s your reputation and the future of your business at stake.

For many of us our office faces Main Street USA, not protected by high rise buildings and security guards. Make decisions that keep that door open. Make a commitment to reach beyond the industry standards and operate with Family Standards. Then go out and tell your community about your commitment. Celebrate it, shout it and post it just like SC Johnson company.

During the grand opening of Spanesi SpA training center and show room in Naperville, IL the Collision Repair Education foudation represented by Brandon Eckenrode, Director of Development and Clark Plucinski, Executive Director accepted a donation of a new Multi Bench 12 for the 2013 Makeover Grant Winner from Spanesi Managing Director, Timothy Morgan. The mission of the Collision Repair Education Foundation is simple and straight-forward: "To secure donations that support philanthropic and collision repair education activities that promote and enhance career opportunities in the industry."But the scope of our endeavor is enormous and complex. We're committed to partnering with generous donors to fuel the future of the collision industry with bold educational initiatives that will:Foster and make accessible an educational environment of the highest quality for future collision repair technicians.Promote a complement of highly-trained, qualified instructors.Help educational institutions acquire state-of-the-art equipment, tools, and supplies.Mold the collision repair technicians of tomorrow by enhancing educational opportunities for the collision students of today -- creating a link between collision repair schools and the businesses that will depend upon their students.Provide the driving force to spearhead a new era of excellence in our industry.

Some people in this industry have resumes and then others have moving trophies of their skill. Ron Coan, Mobsteel is one of those legendary painters. With over 30 years experience as a painter in Detroit you can't think of car from any of the 3 OEM's that Ron hasn't had in his booth as a concept. There are over 50 iconic Concept Cars from Chrysler, Ford and GM on his list including the Ford GT concepts. He also has painted the Pebble Beach winning Bizzarrini and two of the cars for the Legendary Alexander Brothers. To top it off the famous $24.5 million dollar Cadillac Sixteen was a concept and paint work of Ron. A lifelong SATA user, Ron explains the features and benefits of the SATAjet 4000 HVLP and RP editions and why he's SATA for life. www.mobsteel.com Rides to Die For....

Anchoring and Holding for Structure Repair with Spanesi

Today's vehicle manufactures have incorporated extensive use of alternative steel, such as HSS and UHSS. In addition we now have an explosion of Aluminium in use from the OEM's. Understanding how to anchor and hold a vehicle is more critical now then ever. Today's repair procedures require a fixture based system to properly anchor the car. Having a proper anchor plan allows for easier repair and prevents damage from being pulled into the vehicle. We talked with Tim Morgan, Spanesi North America about fixture based systems and the need for proper anchoring and repair planning in Collision Repair.www.collisionhub.com

Hope Is Not a Strategy

Social Media is not a solution. Being from Arkansas I think I’ve heard every joke about Hope possible. The problem is that every week I find myself having to remind companies that Hope may be a place to believe in, but it is not a marketing strategy. In the Collision Repair industry we have an SOP, guideline or best practice for everything from writing the estimate to detailing the car. However, when it comes to marketing and communication we often just spend money and “hope” the audience finds our message. I HOPE they see my print ad....I HOPE they hear my radio ad........ I HOPE they like me on Facebook..........Ever take a road trip without a map? It might have been a fun experience, but you found yourself off track and way behind schedule. Like a good road map, a communication strategy will direct you to your consumers and protect your limited budget. When you know where your going and how to get there, the temptation for the others to stray you will be gone. Right now, there are a ton of temptations in the market. Should I have an app? Does my website need a new look? Should I hire a social media consultant? Should I run a radio add? The first step in building a communication strategy is defining your message. Before you can know where you want to say something (print, radio,TV) you need to know what your going to say. You accomplish this by defining your company’s Brand. Keep in mind a Brand is NOT a logo. Brands are feelings they are the words and images that build an emotional relationship with who you are, not what you do. Who are you? What makes you special? What makes you exclusive to the market? Once you have your Brand, you now have a universal compass by which all communication messages have to orientate themselves with. Everything you say, type or show must support your overall Brand image. Imagine everything said in radio, print, photographs or on YouTube is said directly from your mouth. Are your current communications saying what you want attributed to you? Are you silly holidays, funny bumper stickers and on this day in history? With our Brand message in mind, let’s look at the three categories of communication. They are: 1.) Advertising- Brief and Repeated Communication With An Audience (radio, TV, print). It’s about “blasting” short messages to as many people as possible within a market. They may or may not have any interest in your Brand.2.) Marketing- Direct Information Targets a Specific Group (brochure, website). This group has expressed an interest in your Brand and takes a step to learn more or gather information.3.) Public Relations- Influencing the Influencers of a Market. The power of an influencer takes a thought to an action. The tipping point of business is influencing others to promote your brand and “vouch” for you within your market.
[image]Now this is the hard part. Pull out the books and list everything you paid for in 2012. This includes every little league sponsorship, pen or tablet with your logo, radio, TV and print. Everything you did that was intended for an audience should be listed. Then place each of these expenses into a communication category. Some items will fall into multiple boxes, it’s ok. How balanced are your categories? Are you spending in advertising to heavily? Want to know what’s next? Get this exercise done and call me. I’ll send you the next steps.

PPG Profiles in Performance: Gene Winfield

From the streets of California to the movie screen everything Hot Rod has it's roots with Legendary Gene Winfield. From chopping, channeling and painting every hot rod builder today from Foose to George Barris has a story about how he influenced their style. If you've every blended two colors in a fade, then you've been influenced by Gene Winfield. Growing up in Modesto, California, Winfield was exposed to auto body shops and auto racing, including driving 135 mph in a Ford Model T ("The Thing") at Bonneville Speedway in 1951. He soon opened a business in Modesto, 'Winfield's Custom Shop.' An early innovation was the blended custom paint, where the two colors are carefully faded together.Building on his experience, in 1962, Winfield joined Aluminum Model Toys (AMT) as a consultant style designer for their model kits. AMT hired him in 1966 to manage the new Phoenix, Arizona based 'Speed and Custom Division Shop,' which built full scale cars as promotional vehicles. After AMT, closed this division in 1971, Winfield has continued work in the custom auto body field in Southern California and appears as honored guest at auto related events in the US.www.collisionhub.com www.ppgrefinish.com

Unique is just another day for Troy Trepanier and Rad Rides by Troy from Manteno, IL. For the 50th Anniversary of the Ridler, they held nothing back on the 1956 Buick, named "Nailed" after the unique Nailhead engine. Every part of this car was hand built and crafted by the Rad Rides team, but when it comes to the refinish BASF Glasurit 90 Line was the color of choice.

Refinishing with HVLP Technology

HVLP Technology

Extra savings with maximum transfer efficiency and minimum product consumption.

HVLP = High Volume Low Pressure - low spray pressure technology - designates an internationally recognized low pressure application method.
With HVLP paint spray guns, air cap pressure is maximum 0.7 bar, allowing to obtain a -> transfer rate of considerably above 65 %.
In order to obtain an excellent painting result with HVLP guns, too, a higher air volume is required for atomization. Companies which only possess a small compressor are usually better off with using paint spray guns in RP technology.
It is also important to know that the higher air consumption has practically no influence on the profitability of an HVLP paint spray gun. Savings of expensive paint material achieved with an HVLP gun by far compensate the slight additional cost provoked by the higher air consumption.
Therefore, SATA HVLP paint spray guns are called "Super Savers".
